What is a Data Center?

Γραμμένο απόεπί 14/09/2024

As we spend more time online, the exchange and sharing of information via digital channels is becoming more important for businesses to run. This digital exchange requires huge computers and networking equipment which are located in an centralized physical location, known as the datacenter.

A data center is an specialist computer room that houses the computing and storage equipment needed by a company. The primary components of a data center comprise servers, which house the power to process raw data into usable information, and storage devices that store the information on hard disk drives or robotic tape. A data center also depends on networking and communications equipment, such as routers cables, and switches to help the flow between servers.

The term “data center” began to be used in the 1990s as IT operations expanded and inexpensive networking equipment allowed companies to house their networking equipment within the same space. Companies can either build their own data center on their premises or contract with a third-party provider of data center services who offer managed and colocation. Third-party options usually offer the most cost-effective and energy efficient alternative to on-premises data centers.

Many of these third-party options also provide more flexibility when it comes to policy management. A data center, for example can provide multiple policies in a single location. This allows IT to limit the data workloads by creating distinct policies that satisfy standards for compliance across regions and organizations. This can help reduce security risks and enhance information governance.
